Ancient Hawaiian Games – Enter into a village and time gone by as our island people invite you to participate in some of Hawai`i’s cherished and most enjoyable games

Ulumaika – Experience the exciting ancient Hawaiian game called ulumaika using flat smooth stones that are rolled between two pegs. Similar to bowling, but instead of knocking over pins, the object of the game is to successfully roll the stone between the two pegs. Challenge your partner or other guests at the lü`au.

Pala`ie – Early Hawaiians made mea pa’ani (toys) one favorite called pala’ie (loop and ball game). The game consists of a handle with an open loop at one end and an oval ball of tapa (Bark cloth) attached to a handle by a length of aho (cordage). The winner of this game would be the one who successfully swung the ball under and over and into the loop at the end, making a basket the most times. Guests will engage in a timed match with one another to see who outlasts who.

Tï Leaf Demonstration – The lä’ï, lau kï or tï leaf is considered a sacred and powerful plant to Hawaiians. Every part of the plant could be utilized. The root was distilled to make potent liquor named ‘okolehao. The large, sweet starchy roots were also baked and eaten as a dessert. Lä’ï also has many medicinal and healing properties and could be utilized either alone or as a wrapping for other herbs. The leaves were wrapped around warm stones to serve as hot packs, used in poultices and applied to fevered brows to reduce temperature. A drink from boiled green tï leaves were used to aid nerve and muscle relaxation. Steam from boiled young shoots and leaves made an effective decongestant. The pleasantly fragrant flowers were also used for asthma. Besides its use in healing practices, the large tï leaves became roof thatching, wrappings for cooking food, plates, cups, fishing lures on hukilau nets, woven into sandals, hula skirts, leis and rain capes. Participate in making tï leaf adornments that will be used in the evening’s performance.
